In what order are the Stories displayed on Instagram?

In recent years Instagram has experienced continuous expansion, becoming the most used social network in the world. The definitive leap was also made thanks to Stories , a feature “stolen” a little from Snapchat, which however has definitively consecrated Instagram as the most popular social network.

All we use Instagram Stories, or in any case we know how they work, they are photos or videos that we can share with our followers and that remain for only 24 hours. What many are wondering, however, is how is managed the list of views of the Stories , is it random or is there an algorithm behind it that makes you see more followers than others?

How stories are ordered on Instagram

In fact the list of views to our Story is not random , but it follows precise criteria. Usually Instagram tends to privilege the profiles we interact with the most : so it is likely that the stories you often see at the top are those of the pages and profiles you like most, comment on or interact with.

So Instagram, or rather its algorithm , manages to understand which users we are most constant in interacting with and places them at the top. In summary, therefore, the criteria taken into consideration are:

  • our interactions with profiles;
  • how often we check the stories of the profiles.

Why this? Well, Instagram itself stated that it’s all made to “ help you view the content that’s most important to you “. Finally, the algorithm also takes into account factors such as:

  • time;
  • relationships;
  • interests.

What are “interactions”?

I’ve repeated this term a lot but still haven’t explained what it means. By Instagram interaction I mean any action you perform on a profile:

  • a simple view to a user’s profile;
  • like;
  • comments;
  • viewing posts;
  • viewing stories;
  • replying to stories.

So even if you never comment you don’t like a profile, but I often see it or view its stories, it is very likely that it will appear at the top of the suggested stories.

In what order are listed the profiles watching our stories?

Here’s another question you often ask me: how is the order in which the profiles viewing our stories are managed . Once we publish a Story, we will be able to enter the list of views by simply viewing it and swiping it upwards. What many will ask is: how is this list generated?

In fact, the list of views to our History is not random , but follows precise criteria. The watershed are the number of views , in fact if our story does not have many views the list will appear in chronological order , with the last person who opened in the first position our Story.

When, on the other hand, our Instagram Story begins to have more views, things change. The display order is no longer chronological, but the Instagram algorithm tends to make you see the users with whom you have had the most interactions in the first positions . The interactions must also be reciprocal, it is very likely that if you like and comment on each other with another user, it will appear in the top position in the list of views of the Stories.

If your profile is connected with that of Facebook , and also that of your followers, Instagram will tend to show you your close friends on Facebook , i.e. those with whom you have had the most interactions over time.

What seems to matter the most in the order of display is the number of times that particular follower visits our profile of Instagram . So whoever visits your profile the most will appear higher in the display order.

As we have seen, therefore, the display order of our Instagram Stories is anything but random , and can also give us a lot of feedback on those who often look at our profile, so that we can also identify some “suspicious” or unwanted profile.
