Instagram post sizes: which ones to use?
Today I want to dedicate an article to post size on Instagram . There are different formats to use and not to use to increase engagement on Instagram.
At first little attention was paid to these details, but over time, attracting attention has become increasingly important and with the addition of IGTV, Instagram Stories and Live, it can be difficult to remember all the formats suitable for every single situation.
To make things easier in this article we will see what are the post sizes to use on Instagram.
Instagram Post Sizes: Which One Is Perfect?
As mentioned before there are several formats, but let’s see them in detail.
Square Format (1: 1 or 1080px x 1080px)
The first (the most used) is the classic square. The 1080px x 1080px post is certainly the most used but not always the right one. This format, in my opinion, should not be used for carousels and photos.
For photos I think it’s a really bad format, as there are other formats that are more suitable for this type of post.
It is also suitable for videos, but not IGTV ones. So if you want to use this format for your videos, make sure that the duration is less than a minute.

Portrait format (4: 5 or 1080px x 1350px)
This format is the most suitable for carousels and photos as it takes up almost all of the screen space and, therefore, has a high probability of being noticed and consequently a higher engagement rate.
I always try to use this format whenever possible and the difference in engagement is noticeable in comparison with the square format.
This format is also great for videos, but those recorded vertically.
Landscape format (16: 9 or 1080px x 607px)
This format is used for photos taken horizontally, but honestly I would avoid using it as it takes up very little screen space and users may not notice the post.
As for videos, however, I recommend that you use this format only for IGTV (therefore for videos with a duration greater than one minute).
Instagram had made IGTV available only for videos in vertical format but, probably due to the flop, it changed this rule giving the possibility to publish videos in this format too.
Vertical format (9:16 or 1080px x 1920px)
This format is suitable for IGTV videos, Instagram Stories and Live as it takes up all the screen space.

It cannot be used for photos as Instagram would cut part of the image because it is too long.
Well, we’ve seen all the post sizes to use on Instagram.
As far as I’m concerned, the best format for posts is Portrait, which also helps a lot in terms of engagement.
